Pack your bags!
Packing your hospital bag is one of those exciting milestones that makes everything feel real—your baby is almost here! Whether you’re a first-time mama or adding another little one to your family, knowing what to bring (and what to leave at home) can make the big day smoother and less stressful. This guide breaks down the essentials for you, your baby, and your support person so you can head to the hospital with confidence and peace of mind.
For You (Mama)
Important Documents – ID, insurance card, birth plan.
Comfortable Clothing – Loose gown, robe, nursing bras, socks, slippers.
Toiletries – Toothbrush, deodorant, chapstick, hairbrush, shampoo/conditioner, lotion (hospitals can be very dry).
Snacks & Drinks – Granola bars, trail mix, or whatever you’ll want after delivery.
Relaxation Tools – Essential oils, massage tools, cozy blanket, headphones for calming music.
Eye mask & earplugs – Hospitals are bright and noisy. These help you catch rest when you can.
Massage tools or tennis ball – Great for back pressure during contractions or sore muscles afterward.
Lip balm & face wipes – Hospital air is dry, and these little items help you feel fresh and human.
Snacks you love – Crackers, dried fruit, protein bars, or trail mix. Hospital food doesn’t always hit the spot.
Electrolyte packets – Staying hydrated makes a big difference in recovery and milk supply.
Postpartum herbal spray or balm – Something cooling and soothing for your perineum after birth.
Comfortable nursing bras/tanks – Stretchy and soft; bonus if they can be worn for skin-to-skin too.
Favorite pillow & cozy blanket – Brings a touch of home to your hospital room.
Shower shoes & towel from home – A little comfort upgrade when you’re ready for that first refreshing shower.
Water bottle with straw – Makes sipping between contractions or while nursing much easier.
Doula’s tip: Pack your items in clear zip pouches or labeled cubes so your partner or support person can quickly find what you need without digging.
For Baby
Going-home outfit (soft, weather-appropriate, and with snaps/zippers for easy changes).
Onesies & sleepers (pack 2–3; newborn sizes can be tiny, but having a 0–3 month option helps if baby is bigger).
Swaddle or receiving blankets (hospital blankets are fine, but yours may feel cozier).
Socks and mittens (babies lose heat quickly through their feet and may scratch themselves).
Baby hat (especially important if it’s chilly).
Infant car seat (installed in your car ahead of time—this is a must for leaving the hospital).
Baby nail file or emery board (newborn nails are surprisingly sharp!).
Pacifier (optional—some parents like to bring their own brand).
Doula's tip: Wash baby’s clothes and blankets ahead of time in a gentle, fragrance-free detergent to protect their sensitive skin.
For Your Partner or Support Person
Change of Clothes – Labor can be long—your partner will want to be comfortable.
Pillow/Blanket – Sleeping at the hospital isn’t always glamorous.
Phone Charger & Entertainment – Movies, music, or books for downtime.
Snacks – Hospital food hours don’t always line up with hunger.
Doula-Recommended Bonus Items
As a doula, I’ve seen firsthand how little comforts can make a big difference during your hospital stay. These aren’t “must-haves,” but they often bring extra peace, comfort, and joy for both mama and baby:
Swaddle with a familiar scent – Wrap one in your perfume-free laundry at home; babies recognize your scent and feel comforted by it.
Soothing essential oil spray (like lavender or chamomile) – A gentle spritz on your pillow or blanket can calm nerves and help you rest.
Soft muslin blanket – Lightweight, breathable, and perfect for skin-to-skin or a cozy layer in the car seat.
Faith or encouragement cards – A verse, affirmation, or simple encouraging word can mean so much in a vulnerable moment.
Nursing pillow – Makes feeding in those first days easier on your arms and shoulders.
Baby journal or milestone cards – Capture first memories, footprints, and photos without scrambling.
Comfort item for mama – A favorite robe, cozy socks, or a small blanket from home can help you feel grounded.
Doula’s tip: Pack these in a small separate pouch so they’re easy to grab when you need that extra touch of comfort.
Thoughtful tip: Struggle with anxiety during labor? Include in your bag sour candies or strong mints. The powerful sensory change can help bring you back to the moment and grounded.
